    da Vinci treatment

The treatment of prostate cancer with the assistance of the da Vinci robot is a new cutting edge technology in surgery using highly developed modern medical techniques. In a da Vinci prostatectomy the entire prostate is removed, and if necessary, the surrounding tissue as well. This treatment also reduces the risk of incontinence and impotency to a minimum.
I feel reborn since I had the operation. Everything is working at a 100%, and there is no incontinence problem. - Jack Allen

Regardless of how skilled the surgeon may be, the most common cases of open surgery are always associated with disadvantages such as blood loss, pain, the risk of a disturbed healing process and a long period of recovery due to the incisions of the skin.

The da Vinci system offers the surgeon the following advantages in comparison with open surgery and the conventional methods of minimally invasive surgery.

    The advantages are:

    • 3D view optical capabilities
    • Magnification of 10 to 20 times for more precise identification of structures and    tissue layers
    • Instruments that can move like a human wrist and even more
    • Smaller and more delicate "hand" movements
    • Elimination of natural tremor (trembling of the human hand).
    • Reduction of consequence risks such as impotency and incontinence

    For the patient this means:
    • A shorter stay in hospital
    • Less pain
    • Less blood loss after surgery
    • Small surgical scars
    • Faster recovery and a quicker return to daily activities.

Experience of the urologist is important
In a da Vinci prostatectomy (prostate cancer treatment with da Vinci) the experience of the urologist is crucial. The ability of controlling the da Vinci robot is not enough, because it is the number of treatments per year (learning curve) that determines the experience. Intuitive Surgical, the developer of the da Vinci robot, follows the directive that a urologist must perform 250 da Vinci operations per year to be able to operate independently. A urologist is only considered to be experienced after having performed 500 operations. If a urologist has performed a large amount of laparoscopic operations, he will acquire the required experience sooner.
